According to, Maine is the only state in the country where you must be 19 or older to legally ride in a truck bed. Anyone under the age of 19 must travel in the compartment portion of a van.



There are some exceptions to the law, including for agriculture

There are a handful of exemptions to the law that allow riding in a truck bed, regardless of the age of the individual. One of these exemptions concerns agricultural work. This exemption was put in place for the county’s potato harvest season, but allows all farm workers to be transported in the back of a truck bed between work or training locations.

There are a handful of other exemptions that are less common but still applicable. Parade participants are allowed to ride in a truck bed, regardless of age. During hunting season, persons under the age of 19 may ride in a truck bed as long as they are actively traveling to or returning from a hunting location.

One last rare exception

There is an additional exemption that exists but rarely comes up. If a truck bed is equipped with a factory-installed seat belt, persons under the age of 19 may ride in that truck bed. This is a more common practice in hot states, but Maine has the provision built into the law in case someone takes these steps.
