IndiGo Becomes Sixth Largest Airline by Passenger Volume in the World, Says Aviation Report | Aviation news
Indian airline Indigo has become the sixth largest carrier in the world. According to data published by the Official Airline Guide (OAG), a UK-based organization, Indian airlines rank sixth in the world in terms of passenger volume for March 2022. According to the report, the airline has managed to carry more than 2.02 million passengers until March 28, earning it the top spot. It is also worth noting that the airline is also in the top ranks in terms of frequency and capacity.
IndiGo ranked seventh among major airlines by seat capacity in March 2022, up 41.3% month-on-month and 14.7% year-on-year , according to OAG’s frequency and capacity trend. OAG Frequency & Capacity Statistics data includes airport and route capacity statistics, as well as a list of the world’s top 20 airlines by flights based on monthly data. IndiGo is the only Indian airline to feature on this list.
IndiGo has grown from a single aircraft carrier to a fleet of 276 aircraft since its inception in August 2006. As of January 2022, the airline was India’s largest passenger airline with a market share of 55 .5%. IndiGo has a total of 97 destinations, including 73 domestic and 24 international.

Note that in April, the airline announced the resumption of regular operations of more than 150 international flights from several Indian airports. After the takeover, they added new routes to their home network. Additionally, Indigo recently partnered with Qantas, Australia’s national flag carrier, to launch the first direct flights between South India and Australia.
