Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has resumed passenger flights between Abu Dhabi and Beijing. This is the first direct passenger service from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to Beijing, capital of the People’s Republic of China, since March 23, 2020.

Tony Douglas, Group Managing Director, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Today marks an important moment in Etihad’s history as passenger flights resume to Beijing for the first time in over 800 days. The direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Beijing will undoubtedly facilitate the deepening of bilateral cooperation in various fields and promote the strengthening of ties between the peoples of the two nations. As global travel restrictions rapidly ease, Etihad is equipped to further increase its operations in China and meet growing demand from travelers in both locations to support the resumption of economic and social activities around the world,” added Douglas.

Ahmed Al Qubaisi, Senior Vice President, International Government and Communications, Etihad Aviation Group, commented: “Today’s Etihad flight is a testament to the success of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two capitals and demonstrates the joint determination of the two governments to build on it. Etihad is extremely grateful to be part of this moment and to contribute to the ever-closer ties between the UAE and China. Etihad continues to deliver on its commitment to facilitate a resilient and prosperous air bridge between the United Arab Emirates and China, and beyond. This maintains the movement of passengers and cargo and supports economic and political exchanges between the two nations.

After the inaugural flight, regular weekly service will begin on July 6 and will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with Business and Economy cabins.

Airline expands self-service bag drop
As travelers start flying for the summer holidays, Etihad Airways is expanding its self-service baggage drop-off facilities at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The service offers a faster check-in experience and can accommodate a larger number of guests who can then avoid queues. Once checked in online, the self-service facilities allow travelers to easily retrieve their reservation, print the bag tag and process their baggage in less than two minutes.

John Wright, Vice President Network, Airports & Cargo Operations, Etihad Airways, said: “With the removal of many travel restrictions, Etihad expects summer holiday traveler numbers to soar. To make the airport experience seamless for our customers, Etihad is offering more self-service options at Abu Dhabi International Airport, where they can avoid long queues by checking in from first online and following the extremely popular Verified to Fly process.

COVID-related travel restrictions have been completely removed for travelers to Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Oman, Switzerland, Turkey and UK.
