Cameron Costa of New Bedford will oppose Chris Markey in primary
Cameron Costa of New Bedford has launched a campaign to run for Massachusetts State Representative in Bristol’s 9th District against longtime incumbent Chris Markey.
Costa announced today that he will run against Markey in the September 6 Democratic primary for the district seat, which includes all of Dartmouth and parts of northern New Bedford.
Markey, a Dartmouth resident, has held the seat since 2011.
“My decision to run for State Representative in Bristol’s 9th District was made with care
consideration after speaking to voters throughout the district,” Costa said in a statement. “Many voters expressed frustration with the current direction of the state and felt that the SouthCoast had been left out of the conversation about moving our state forward on many issues.”
Costa has been actively involved in issues such as education, mental health and workers’ rights. He was nominated by Governor Charlie Baker in 2021 to serve on the Board of Higher Education, and in this capacity, he recently visited WBSM to discuss the rising costs of education for students.
He is also a board member of the New Bedford Site Advisory Council for the Department of Mental Health, as well as a director of AFSCME Council 93, Local 72.
The 20-year-old is a graduate of Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech in the Culinary Arts program. He earned an associate’s degree in business administration from Bristol Community College and will graduate from UMass Dartmouth with a degree in Management: Leadership and History in May.
Its platform is visible on its website, CameronCosta.org.
Markey is the latest SouthCoast congressman to face a primary challenger. Rep. Bill Straus of Mattapoisett, who has held Bristol’s 10th seat since 1993, faces a challenge from Rick Trapilo of Fairhaven in September. Robert McConnell of Fairhaven, a Republican, has already announced he will contest Bristol’s 10th seat in the general election in November.
