BoA receives a new Boeing 737-800

On July 8, Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), the Bolivian airline, announced at a ceremony that it had received a new Boeing 737-800 aircraft and would soon enter it into service in its domestic commercial operations and international.

The ceremony took place at Jorge Wilstermann International Airport in Cochabamba, a city in central Bolivia located 45 minutes by plane from the capital, La Paz. The President of Bolivia, along with relevant government officials and senior management of the BoA and the airport, attended the ceremony.


Bolivian President Lucho Arce said the acceptance of the new aircraft represented the start of a new journey for BoA ​​and a promising future.

BoA Chief Executive Ronald Casso said at the ceremony that,

“We are proud to be able to present Bolivia with our first of four planned medium-range aircraft. This aircraft will serve our local passengers and routes to Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Lima, as part of our reactivation, consolidation and revitalization plan. expansion.”

The newly received 737-800 (aircraft registration number CP-3196) was leased to BoA by Carlyle Aviation Partners. It has an all-economy class cabin with 168 seats. And it is BoA’s first aircraft, funded by the Productive Industrial Revolution Funding (FINPRO), a program dedicated to building fleet maintenance capacity and hangar modernization.

BoA’s current fleet

BoA’s current fleet consists of ten Boeing 737-300s with an average age of 25.7 years, four Boeing 737-700s (19.4 years old), five Boeing 737-800s (19.5 years old ), four Boeing 767-300ERs (over 27 years old), two CRJ 200s (20.7 years old) and four MA-60s from Chinese equipment manufacturer AVIC.

Although BoA has announced that its newly received 737-800 is a “next generation aircraft”, the fact is that it is neither new nor last generation (the last generation would be the 737 MAX).

BoA’s new 737-800 was manufactured in 2006 and delivered to Excel Airways in May 2006, then Xtra Airways and XL Airways. In 2007, she was leased to Nok Air for a few months and returned to the XL Airways fleet in 2008. In 2009, she was leased by Malaysia, and in 2010 she was sold to its subsidiary Firefly. In 2014, it was stored until Indonesian carrier Sriwijaya Air leased it. In 2021 he went to Blue Air, and now he’s coming to BoA.

On the other hand, since August 16, 2011, Bolivia had a law prohibiting the operation of aircraft with more than 25 years of service, which makes BoA’s 737-300 and 767-300ER fleet unsuitable for operation. .

Thus, last March, during the International Aeronautics and Space Exhibition (FIDAE), BoA announced its plan to introduce two Airbus A330-200 aircraft, replacing its old Boeing 767-300s. The new A330s will join BoA in the second half of this year.

In 2012 and 2013, BoA previously operated an Airbus A330 through a wet lease from HiFly.

Expansion plans in destination network

BoA launched the route to Lima (LIM), Peru, last February, which is its fifth international destination after Buenos Aires/Ezeiza (EZE), Argentina; Sao Paulo (GRU), Brazil; Miami (MIA), USA; and Madrid (MAD), Spain.

In 2019, BoA already operated a weekly flight between Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, carrying nearly three thousand passengers. They were also studying the possibility of a direct connection with Cuba.

Nationally, BoA is the main operator, connecting all major cities like Cobija, Cochabamba, Uyuni, La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Sucre, Tarija, Trinidad and Yacuiba.
