Alice C. Jacobson (Allie) passed away peacefully on November 14, 2021, at the age of 103. She was born in Portland, Oregon, on August 8, 1918, to Albert and Cleo Wiesendanger. As a young girl, Allie quickly learned to love the outdoors; many summers were spent with his family at Eagle Creek Campground in the Columbia River Gorge, where his father was an American Ranger. Throughout her life, Allie hiked nearly every trail in the Columbia River Gorge and hiked the Oregon and Washington waterfalls with her family until she was 70. After graduating from Jefferson High School in Portland in 1936, she went to Oregon State University to study nursing, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Science. From there, Allie graduated from what is now the OHSU School of Nursing. It was there that she met Leonard “Jake” Jacobson, MD and married on August 9, 1941.
During the war years, Allie looked after their first son, AD and worked as a nurse at OHSU Hospital & Clinic and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland while Leonard Jacobson was overseas with the US Army. After Leonard returned home, they had another son, James, and then in 1948, twins Jerry and John. Allie’s family then moved to Eugene, Oregon after Leonard completed his surgical residency. While raising a family of four boys, Allie became very active in Eugene’s civic and professional life. She was president of the Lane County Medical Society Auxiliary from 1950 to 1951, was president of the Oregon Medical Auxiliary from 1955 to 1956, and was chair of the YWCA board of directors in 1959.
In 1952, Allie received the award for Outstanding Young Woman of the Year by Eugene Register-Guard for her volunteer community service. In addition, Allie was the National President of Health Career Recruitment for the American Medical Association Auxiliary and participated in numerous activities of the Lane County Medical Association (LCMSA), PEO (past chapter president) and the Junior League. . She was made an honorary member of LCMSA in 1986.
After earning her Master of Science degree from the University of Oregon, Allie continued her education and enrolled and graduated in our nation’s first class nurse practitioner (NP) program at the University of Colorado in 1977. Allie then worked at Sheldon High School in Eugene. as a school nurse and health education teacher for 15 years.
In 1995, upon retirement, Allie and Jake moved to their new home at Cascade Manor and continued to hike the Oregon trails and travel. Allie was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Jacobson, MD, and son, James Leonard Jacobson. She is survived by her sons, Dr. AD Jacobson {Donna} (Phoenix, AZ), Jerry Jacobson (Eugene, OR) and John M. Jacobson (Beaverton, OR), six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren .
The family are extremely grateful to the wonderful and caring staff at Cascade Manor, where Allie lived with her husband, until his death in 2008.
